Linlithgow Thistle Charity Tournament

Saturday, 30th July 2011

Linlithgow Thistle hosted their second annual preseason tournament at a sun-drenched Linlithgow Rugby Club.  A range of talent was on offer for the large number of spectators, with SFL clubs Stenhousemuir and Berwick Rangers represented by their Under 19 teams, along with top-flyte local amateur sides Bathgate Thistle AFC, Bo'ness AFC, Brightons, Camelon Albion, Denny AFC, Linlithgow Thistle, and Stenhousemuir AFC.  The Rugby Club again participated in the form of a select team, that performed admirably.

In the end, it was Central Scottish Amateur Premier League club Brightons that were crowned Champions of the tournament.

With Brightons having nominated Children's Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS) as the charity to receive the winner's pot, a cheque totalling £816 from all proceeds collected on the day, was duly presented, along with the impressive tournament trophy.

Brightons success did not end there.  Their star forward, Sean Williamson, also scooped the Tournament's Top Goal Scorer Award having scored three times over the course of the day.

Finalists, Berwick Rangers U19s, although disappointed in missing out on the trophy through penalties, were able to celebrate the Player of the Tournament Award, with the referee's voting for Dean Crane as the worthy winner.  Special mention must also be given to the Brightons goalkeeper, Joe Lavery, for some of his breath-taking penalty saves over the course of the Tournament.

The tie of the tournament was the U19 semi-final clash between Stenhousemuir FC and Berwick Rangers.  The fast-flowing passing, vision and over-lapping runs were a joy to watch.

Linlithgow Thistle wish to express their sincere gratitude to the following people and organisations that made this all possible:

  • Linlithgow Rugby Club for the use of their most excellent facilities and for providing the barbecue
  • Stenhousemuir FC for the permission to use their mobile goals
  • Martin Sweeny of Knight Shades, West Calder for his sponsorship of the event signage and for the photography throughout the Tournament

With all proceeds to a worthy cause, and an excellent preseason workout for the teams ahead of the new season, this tournament once again proved to be a successful community event with the true winner being charity.
